Description
The United States of America, under President Zachary Taylor, issued this land grant to Finley Holmes. This land patent is for section twenty-seven, township 9 south, range 4 west which lays in modern day Desha county.
Biographical/Historical Note
Finley Holmes was born March 24, 1802, in South Carolina to an Irish immigrant of the same name. He married Emily G. Raines in 1823. It is unclear if he lived in Arkansas for any length of time, but he owned 12,000 acres of land in both Desha and Jefferson counties, which he divided and gave to his seven sons, including Abercrombie, a farmer in Desha County. Finley Holmes built his plantation home on the Tennessee and Mississippi state line in 1852. He died September 24, 1885, in Mississippi.
