This letter, written by E. Grandison Corder, describes his dire financial straits and his need for help from Major John Henry.

Biographical/Historical Note

Emelius Grandison Corder was born in Rutherford, Tennessee on June 8, 1817. He married Margaret Matlock around 1844 and had two children, David and Lucinda. Margaret died in November of 1849.He later married Sarah Price and had two children with her, Annette and Emelius. He lived with his wife and their children at Lukfata, Choctaw Nation. He worked as a licensed trader. Emelius died on June 28,1887, in De Queen, Arkansas, at the age of 70, and was buried in Chapel Hill Cemetery. His wife, Sarah, died on January 21, 1905 and is buried next to him.
