Biographical/Historical Note
This patent was issued to James Belcher for land in Old River Township, Arkansas County. Arkansas County originally formed much of what is now Mississippi, Crittenden, Phillips, Poinsett, St. Francis, Monroe, Arkansas, Desha, Chicot, Ashley, Drew, Jefferson, and Prairie counties. This section of land stands between what is now Phillips County and Monroe County. James Belcher was a plantation owner, and in 1840 he owned 39 slaves. Seventeen of whom worked in agriculture.
