Biographical/Historical Note

James Scull (1779-1842) merchant, local politician, and state official, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Benjamin Franklin Scull and Elizabeth Berry. James came to what is now Arkansas about 1803 and married Monette Vaugine, a member of an Arkansas Post family. James' brothers Ben, Hewes, William, and possibly Joseph, were also early Arkansas settlers. The family lived in Jefferson and Arkansas counties. James served as the Treasurer of Arkansas Territory from 1819-1833. One of Scull's granddaughters, Mildred Scull, daughter of Henry W. Scull of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, married Henry H. Haizlip, a Memphis, Tennessee, businessman. Haizlip assembled this collection.
