This collection consists of George K. Stephens' general store ledger, Sulphur Rock, Independence County, Arkansas, 1870-1875.

Biographical/Historical Note

George K. Stephens, businessman and farmer, was born in 1840 in Tennessee, the son of Isaac and Mary J. Stephens. His family moved to Jackson County, Arkansas, shortly before the Civil War. During the war, he served in the First Arkansas Infantry, Confederate Army. Apart from operating a general store at Sulphur Rock in Independence County from 1870-1875, he spent the remainder of his life in Jackson County. He died after 1890.
