Biographical/Historical Note
The Arkansas State Claims Commission, created in 1955 by Act 276 of the Arkansas General Assembly, is the government entity that handles claims against the state of Arkansas and its government agencies. The Commission is also the researching entity for the Arkansas General Assembly. The Commission came into being from the 1874 Arkansas Constitution in which sovereign immunity was enacted, meaning the state of Arkansas could not be sued. Thus, the Arkansas State Claims Commission was established so that claimants could possibly be compensated.
