Description

This collection contains a list of Confederate prisoners who died at Camp Butler, Springfield, Illinois.

Biographical/Historical Note

Camp Butler was a camp in central Illinois originally intended for a military training camp, the second largest in the state, but was used as a prison shortly after its establishment after a large number of Confederate prisoners were brought there after the battles at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson. Sickness, especially pneumonia, was a major problem. The camp was active for thirteen months, closing on May 19, 1863, and buried over 850 Confederate soldiers.
