Description
This collection contains two copies of The Daily Citizen from July 2, 1863, printed on newspaper.
Biographical/Historical Note
The Daily Citizen was a newspaper published by J.M. Swords in Vicksburg, Mississippi. As the American Civil War went on, it eventually ran out of newsprint and had to use the back of wallpaper instead. When Vicksburg surrendered on July 4, Union forces found the place abandoned with some of the type still in place. They added their own note to the end of the paper and published it.
