Description

This collection contains one photocopy of a broadside, an ad for Illustrated Sporting World (New York), stating "No. 57, Out Monday, May 17, Will contain Photograph and Illustration of the Hanging of Geo. W. Carroll, who was hanged last week, at Searcy, Ark., for the murder of his wife."

Biographical/Historical Note

George W. Carroll was hanged on April 30, 1886, for the murder of his wife, Lizzie, by pushing her in a well and holding her down with a stick. He said that he was influenced to do so by Viney Tidwell, his half-brother's widow, with whom it was suspected he was having an affair. The case against Viney Tidwell was dismissed, but she may have narrowly escaped lynching by fleeing the area. Carroll's hanging was the last legal one in White County.
