Biographical/Historical Note

An execution sale is a sale of property by the sheriff under authority of a court's writ of execution in order satisfy an unpaid obligation. James D. Hawkins was born in Crawford County on September 1, 1843, and was an apprentice in the harness and saddler's trade until the outbreak of the U.S. Civil War. He enlisted in Carroll's Company in 1861 under General Pierce and later in Company G, Twenty-second Regiment Arkansas Infantry, after his previous company disbanded. He was wounded on December 7, 1862, at Prairie Grove, but survived to also fight at Helena, Little Rock, and Camden. He was elected sheriff of Crawford County in 1886 and 1888, as well as being elected mayor of Van Buren in 1886. R.M. Thurston may have been a Private in Captain Thomas W. Marlar's Company.
