This collection contains a typed history of Hendrix College, a brochure of the Hendrix College Centennial Fund, and a letter regarding the Centennial Fund brochure from John Hugh Reynolds.

Biographical/Historical Note

Hendrix College is a private liberal arts college in Conway, Arkansas. It was founded by a Methodist minister as a primary school called Central Institute in 1876 in Altus, Arkansas. In 1881, secondary and collegiate departments were added, and the name was changed to Central Collegiate Institute. It was renamed again in 1889 as Hendrix College, and the primary school was discontinued. Secondary Education at the college continued until 1925. In 1890, the Hendrix Board of Trustees voted to move Hendrix College to Conway, Arkansas. The college briefly became known as Hendrix-Henderson College in 1929, after merging with Henderson-Brown College in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. The name went back to Hendrix College two years later. In 1933, Hendrix College absorbed Galloway Woman's College in Searcy, Arkansas. Hendrix College is affiliated with the United Methodist Church; however, it offers a secular curriculum and students come from a variety of different religious backgrounds.
