Description

This collection contains records of church events and members for New Bethel Church in McNeil, Arkansas, dating from 1869-1886. It also contains a typed index of the names that can be found in the records and genealogical research for one of the church clerks, Samuel Hannibal Edington. S.H. Edington was the great-grandfather of the donors of this collection, Sara Johnson and Sylvia Sullivan Skinner. Also included in the collection, is a photocopy of a newspaper article on the history of New Bethel Church and its merging with Lebanon and Concord Baptist Churches to form Victory Baptist Church and photocopy of a newspaper article about the 106th anniversary of Victory Baptist Church.

Biographical/Historical Note

New Bethel Church was a church in the community of Laughlin, (Columbia County, Ark.), in the 1800s. It eventually consolidated with Concord Baptist Church in Milner, Arkansas, and Lebanon Church in Caney, Arkansas. Both New Bethel and Lebanon Church had been organized and represented in the Columbia Baptist Association as far back as 1865. Concord Baptist Church was established in the vicinity of Milner Schoolhouse in the community of Milner, Arkansas, on March 2, 1890. The three churches merged in 1894, and the new church became Cross Roads Baptist Church. At the time of the consolidation, New Bethel had 65 members, Lebanon had 14 members, and Concord had 34 members. On March 2, 1894, the name was changed to Victory Baptist Church. In 1947, Milner School gave its land and building to the church. The church still holds services in this location in the community of Milner in the township of McNeil, Arkansas, under the name of Victory Baptist Church. The pastor as of February 2020 is Lonnie Warren.
