This collection has Jane Letitia Johnston’s certificate to teach in Craighead, Sharp, and Lawrence counties from 1902-1910, one copy of The Gallowegian, a publication that was written by the senior class of Galloway Female College, published in February of 1913, and six photographs. Photographs in this collection include images of the 1927 flood in Sharp County, an elementary class photograph, and photographs of the Hardy High girls’ basketball team, Jonesboro Senior Class, and the graduating class for Galloway College 1902.

Biographical/Historical Note

Jane Letitia Johnston was born in Ireland in August of 1882. She moved to America and attended Galloway Women’s College in Searcy, Arkansas, graduating in 1902. Galloway was a Women’s College established by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1889. Jane became a teacher shortly after graduating. The school closed in June of 1933 due to budgetary issues.
