Description

This collection contains correspondence between Grace Porterfield and James Weldon Crawford from circa 1920s. It also includes one note on a Galloway Female College account receipt dated 1919 regarding a wire sent to Grace Porterfield from her father W.E. Porterfield.

Biographical/Historical Note

Grace Porterfield was born in 1902 in Hope, Arkansas, to William E. and Lucy Porterfield. The letters in this collection are addressed to her from Weldon Crawford. They are written on stationary from the American Grocer Co. in England, Arkansas, and The Travelers Insurance company in Malvern, Arkansas. It is believed that Crawford worked for these companies at the time the letters were written. According to Census records, the two eventually married. The collection also contains one note written on an account receipt from Galloway Female College. It is believed that Porterfield attended school there. Grace Porterfield died on October 6, 1993.
