Description
This collection contains a letter and a historic recollection, both written by J.F. Bates, of the Cane Hill murders of 1839.
Biographical/Historical Note
On June 15, 1839, William Carter Wright of Cane Hill, Arkansas, and four of his children were murdered in their home. An investigation into the murder was conducted by the Cane Hill Independent Regulating Company, a "citizen's vigilante group." Five men (James Barnes, Jackson Turner, John Richmond, and William Bailey) were eventually hanged for the murders.
