Description
This collection contains a letter from W.O. Byler Secretary-Treasurer of the St. Francis Levee District Board of Directors, to the Arkansas Secretary of State, Ed. F. McDonald, requesting a certified copy of two Acts passed at the last special session affecting the St. Francis Levee District. One of the Acts authorized the Levee District to exchange bonds for right of way, and the other authorized the District to pay for damages on lands from which levee protection had been withdrawn provided the district had obligated itself to do so and authorized bonds to be issued for this purpose.
Biographical/Historical Note
The St. Francis Levee District was established on March 21, 1893, and included the counties of Crittenden, Cross, Lee, Mississippi, Phillips, Poinsett, and St. Francis. It was established to build and maintain levees. Over time, the District became a powerful economic and political influence in the state.
