Description

This collection contains a ledger with the 1878 court testimony for the case against Thompson Gregory Bates and J. M. Hooper, charged with the July 28, 1876 murder of Peter Kyles Beam of Waldron, Arkansas.

Biographical/Historical Note

The murder of Peter K. Beam was related to the Waldron War, a decade-long period of crime and murder in Scott County, Arkansas, which had roots in Reconstruction politics in Arkansas. Much of the animosity was related to infighting between rival Republican Party factions. Peter Kyles Beam was a well-known citizen of Scott County, Arkansas, who warned Sheriff Nathan Floyd that Beam had been offered a bounty to shoot Sheriff Floyd. Thompson Gregory Bates and J.M. Hooper were charged for the murder of Beam, but were not convicted. The murder of Beam remains unsolved, but it is believed that he was killed for warning Sheriff Floyd.
