Biographical/Historical Note
The National Grange of the Patrons of Husbandry was a fraternal organization that began in 1867 under the guidance of Oliver Hudson Kelley. The organization worked toward a better life in rural areas, and targeted farmers for its membership. The organization was one of the first of its kind to allow men and women to participate equally. The first grange was established in Arkansas in 1872 by John T. Jones in Helena. With the help of A.J. Vaughan, they were successful in establishing the Arkansas State Grange in 1873. The Clark Grange #232 was established in Pope County on February 14, 1874. At its peak in Arkansas in 1876, the Grange boasted 20,000 members. The granges were slowly phased out in Arkansas by the 1890s.
