Biographical/Historical Note
Ira McLean Barton was born to Levi W. (1818 March 1-1899 March 10) and Mary Ann Pike Barton (died 1840) on March 11, 1840, in Newport, Sullivan County, New Hampshire. As Barton’s mother died when he was an infant, Ira was placed in the home of Levi’s sister, Mrs. Amos Kidder at Canaan, New Hampshire. On August 25, 1852, Levi married Lizzie F. Jewett of Nashau, New Hampshire. At seventeen, Ira McLean Barton taught at Newport, Claremont, and Alstead, New Hampshire, before following his father’s footsteps in attending Kimball Union Academy, then in 1858 Dartmouth College, from which he did not graduate. He began studying law in his father’s office and was admitted to the bar in 1863. Following military service during the Civil War, Ira McLean Barton was appointed second lieutenant in the regular army and stationed at Pine Bluff, Arkansas, a commission he resigned at the end of two years. He was then appointed district attorney for the tenth district of Arkansas and afterwards judge of the Jefferson County, Arkansas, criminal court. While in Pine Bluff, he was part owner, and for a while chief editor, of the Jefferson Republican. Ira returned to Newport, New Hampshire, in December 1875, where he practiced law with his father until his death January 19, 1876. In 1861, Ira married Helen M. Wilcox (born 1837 January 27), daughter of David and Betsey Kelsey Wilcox of Newport, New Hampshire. On July 13, 1868, Barton married Addie L. Barton at Ludlow, Windsor County, Vermont. Addie outlived Barton, dying June 6, 1900.
