Description
This collection contains correspondence related to the Rural Electrification Administration plan to extend power to rural regions of Arkansas.
Biographical/Historical Note
Sidney McMath, 34th governor of Arkansas, championed a plan by the Rural Electric Administration (REA) to extend power to all regions of the state. A major element of this plan was the building of a steam-generated plant to produce electricity on the Arkansas River near Ozark. Plans for the site were in the making for almost a decade; however, approval had previously been blocked in the Public Service Commission by the Arkansas Power and Light Company. After becoming governor, McMath appointed a new commission and then gained approval for a construction loan from the Small Business Administration.
