This collection contains records pertaining to Jane Lindsey of Saline County, Arkansas' claim before the Southern Claims Commission between 1871 and 1879. Her claim of loyalty was not proved according to the Commission.
Biographical/Historical Note
Jane Davis Lindsey (1805-1886) was born in Kentucky around 1805 to Nathan Davis and Jane Ewing Davis. Jane Davis married John Young Lindsey in 1822 in Kentucky. They would later move to Saline County, Arkansas. Jane Lindsey claimed that during the Civil War, troops from the 3rd Iowa and 1st Missouri Regiments under the command of Colonel Ritter came to the Lindsey’s property and crops, and animals. Lindsey filed a claim in her name as her husband had died in October 1866. Lindsey claimed both she and her husband were loyal to the Union and did not support the Confederacy in any way. However, Lindsey’s claim was denied. Lindsey died December 24, 1886 in Saline County, Arkansas.
