Description
This collection contains a letter of dismissal written November 26, 1867 from the Batesville Chapter 9 of the Royal Arch Masons. Jacob W. Shook requested the dismissal and was granted one as a member in good standing.
Biographical/Historical Note
Jacob Wright Shook (1823-1882) was born in Madison County, Missouri January 29, 1823. His family moved to Hempstead County, Arkansas when he was 7 years old. Shook joined the Methodist Episcopal Church at 14 and eventually became a preacher in the Arkansas and was later appointed to the Illinois Circuit in 1881. Shook's health declined after the death of his wife Sarah Hulsey Shook whom he had married in 1853. He went to Florida in March of 1882 to recuperate but instead suffered further from pleurisy shortly after arriving there. He died in Florida in March 1882.
