This collection contains a photocopy of a roster from Dallas County, Arkansas recording the men who enlisted there during World War I.
Biographical/Historical Note
Between 1917 and 1918 the United States held three successive draft registrations in preparation for its entry into World War I. These registrations required that every able-bodied man (African-American, White, Native American, or non-citizen) between the ages of 21 and 45 report to his local draft board and complete a registration card giving detailed personal information. Some twenty-three million men complied. Arkansas contributed almost 72,000 troops and many of these Arkansans distinguished themselves during the war. Twenty-eight men received the Distinguished Service Cross, the second-highest award given by the United States to military personnel. One man, Herman Davis was selected by General John J. Pershing as Arkansas’ greatest war hero and listed fourth on the roll of valor. The war also led to the construction of a training center Camp Pike (present day Camp Robinson) in North Little Rock and Eberts Field for training pilots in Lonoke County.
