This collection contains three letters written between 1937 and 1950 for various candidates for Arkansas political offices.
Biographical/Historical Note
Carl Edward Bailey (1894-1948) served as governor of Arkansas from 1937-1941. A lawyer by profession, he held a number of public offices, beginning with prosecuting attorney of the Sixth Judicial District of Arkansas. He was elected as Arkansas's attorney general in 1934 and in 1937 as governor of Arkansas. He ran for a third term in 1940 but was defeated by Homer M. Adkins. James H. Pilkinton was born January 5, 1914 to Ivison Lane Pilkinton and Virginia Betts Pilkington. Pilkington served as a senator from the ninth district in the 1939 and 1941 General Assemblies. He also served as prosecuting attorney of the eighth judicial district and Chancery Judge. Benjamin Travis Laney Jr., born November 25, 1896, served two terms as governor of Arkansas. His first term was in 1944 and his second in 1946. He ran for a third term in 1950 but was defeated by Sidney McMath. Laney died on January 21, 1977, in Magnolia and was buried in Camden Memorial Cemetery.
