This collection contains two receipts for C.P. Bertrand from 1860.
Biographical/Historical Note
Charles P. Bertrand (1808-1865) was born November 23, 1808, in New York to Pierre and Eliza Wilson Bertrand. His father died while he was still an infant. His mother then married Dr. Matthew Cunningham, who later became the first mayor of Little Rock. After the family moved to Arkansas in 1820, Bertrand studied law with Robert Crittenden. In 1830, he and Crittenden founded the Arkansas Advocate, the second newspaper in the territory. In 1835-1836, he served as State Treasurer for the Arkansas Territory, and in 1836 as secretary for the first constitutional convention. He was a member of the Arkansas House of Representatives from 1840-1841 and 1844-1849. In 1855-1856, he was the mayor of Little Rock. He also served as the president of the Memphis Telegraph Company, the first company to bring telegraph lines to Arkansas in 1860. He married Mary Hannah Morris, a sister of Mrs. Crittenden, on April 28, 1836, in Frankfort, Kentucky. They had two children: Robert Crittenden Bertrand and a daughter, who died at the age of 15. Charles Bertrand died August 27, 1865, and is buried in Mount Holly Cemetery in Little Rock.
