This collection contains a journal kept by Sergeant James Lawrence Ferguson, Captain Parker's Company, Turner's Cavalry, Confederate States Army circa 1864.
Biographical/Historical Note
James Lawrence Ferguson (1816-1864) was born December 23, 1816 near Richburg in Chester County, South Carolina, to John and Eleanor Ferguson. James Lawrence Ferguson married his second cousin once removed, Elizabeth Priscilla Ferguson in February 1837. Elizabeth Priscilla died in January 1847 as a result of complications of childbirth. Ferguson remarried November 23, 1847 to Mary Ann Edwards. In November 1856, Ferguson and his family moved from South Carolina to Rye, Arkansas. After the Civil War started, Ferguson enrolled as a Sergeant in Captain Parker’s Company, Turner’s Cavalry, Confederate States Army. While home on leave in April 1864 he was captured by Union troops and taken prisoner first at Pine Bluff, Arkansas and then Rock Island Prison, Illinois. Fergus died of consumption at Rock Island Prison December 10, 1864.
