This collection contains letters written by James Henry Hall from 1863 to 1892.

Biographical/Historical Note

James Henry Hall was born in Wayne County, Michigan to Isaac Hall and Sallie Jackson Hall, July 2, 1839. Hall began teaching at the age of 19. He enlisted in Company H, Twelfth Michigan Infantry, United States Army in 1861. Hall's enlisted rank was private but by the end of the war he was a first lieutenant. He returned to Michigan and bought a small farm. Hall married Marcia Davis and they had at least two children, Fern M. Hall and James L. Hall.
