This collection contains a deed dated October 13, 1820 between Henry Cassidy and Sylvanus Phillips both of Arkansas.
Biographical/Historical Note
Sylvanus Phillips (1765-1830) was born around 1765 and became one of the earliest white settlers of Arkansas, living near the mouth of the St. Francis River around 1797. Phillips was a land speculator and territorial representative. In May 1820, newly formed Phillips County, Arkansas was named after him by the Arkansas Territorial Legislature. By 1815, Sylvanus Phillips moved to an area near The Phillips County town of Helena was established by Phillips and another speculator, William Russell. Sylvanus Phillips married Phoebe Dunn September 1, 1808 and had two daughters, Harriet and Helena. Helena Phillips was the namesake of Helena, Arkansas established by her father who named the town after his young daughter. Phillips had another daughter, Caroline by a second marriage. Sylvanus Phillips died October 31, 1830 in Helena, Arkansas.
