Biographical/Historical Note
The Tenth Arkansas Confederate Infantry Regiment was organized at Springfield, Conway County, Arkansas, in July 1861. Company A was known as the Quitman Rifles. The company had eight non-commissioned officers and 94 men. It was assigned to General John S. Bowen's brigade and moved to Kentucky. The company fought at Shiloh under General John C. Breckinridge, moved to Vicksburg, then moved south to Louisiana, just north of New Orleans. In July 1863, the Quitman Rifles surrendered to General Ulysses Grant at Port Hudson. The officers were imprisoned at Johnson's Island, Ohio, on Lake Erie. Colonel A.R. Witt reorganized the unit into Witt's Cavalry after a prisoner exchange.
