Biographical/Historical Note
The Community Chest of Greater Little Rock was formed in 1923 by the Chambers of Commerce of Little Rock, North Little Rock and Jacksonville. Its purpose was to unite charitable fundraising efforts in one annual appeal. The local organization was part of a national movement that began about 1913 in Cleveland, Ohio. By the 1960s, most Community Chests including Little Rock's became part of the on-going United Way network of locally based donors supporting health and human services organizations within a given community. This collection of papers from the 1937 and 1939 Community Chest campaigns shows how business and professional men [and women] organized their activities for the charity in the Little Rock area. These appear to be from the desk of Beverly Lambert, Jr. (1907-?), a volunteer canvasser who held several posts in state government including assistant secretary to Governor Carl Baily and also in the state comptroller office in the late 1930s. Lambert became a banker in West Memphis following World War II service in the Army Air Corps.
