Biographical/Historical Note

Benjamin Harvey Greathouse was born near present day Conway, Arkansas on April 26, 1849. After serving in the Civil War as a member of the Confederate cavalry, he married Martha Stout on March 18, 1869. In 1871, he was licenses as a Methodist minister and preached in Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma. In 1874, he was appointed a deacon in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, Arkansas Conference, and in 1876 he was appointed by the same Conference as an elder. He retired from the ministry in the early 1900's and served for two terms in the Arkansas State Senate and one term in the State House of Representatives from Washington County, Arkansas. He died in Lincoln, Arkansas on May 2, 1940.
