Description
This collection contains a bill for work done on the construction of a building for the Forrest City Baptist College
Biographical/Historical Note
The Forrest City Baptist College was established by the Mt. Vernon Association of the Southern Baptist Church. Josephus Shackleford was the first president of the Forrest City Baptist College in 1876.The Mt. Vernon association paid 7,000 dollars for construction of a school building and had forty students at the College in 1876. By 1877 the school was renamed the Forrest City Baptist High School and had 100 students enrolled. However by 1878 concerns the association expressed concerns over debt and the school's continued existence. No other mention is found after 1878 so it is possible the school was closed shortly after these concerns.
