Description
This announcement for Phi Kappa Sigma College was dated February 1859.
Biographical/Historical Note
Phi Kappa Sigma College, located in Monticello, Arkansas, opened February 7, 1859, and was chartered by the state legislature February 21, 1859. It was also the first, and possibly the only, college named for a fraternity. James W. Barrow, founder and president of Phi Kappa Sigma College, was a member of the fraternity and graduate of Centenary College in 1859. Phi Kappa Sigma College never had a chapter of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. Before the Civil War, Barrow supported the Union, but after Arkansas seceded, he allowed Confederate forces to use the college as a storehouse. Union forces later took over the college and used it as a hospital, burning it when they left.
