Description
This collection contains two Union League commission certificates, signed by O.A. Hadley and J.C. Corbin, appointing members to the State Council of Arkansas in 1871, and six blank forms.
Biographical/Historical Note
The Union League of America was founded in 1862 to promote loyalty to the Union, the Republican Party, and to Abraham Lincoln, as well as to support organizations that assisted Union soldiers, such as the United States Sanitary Commission. The Union League organized in southern states after the Civil War as an arm of the Republican Party, to assist freedmen and to encourage them to vote and support the Republican Party.
