This collection contains letters, pamphlets, and other items belonging to Weldon E. Wright, primarily concerning the $30,000 Wright loaned to Elisha Baxter during the Brooks-Baxter War.

Biographical/Historical Note

Weldon Edwards Wright, the son of James and Mary Williamson Wright, was born in Hampton Roads, Virginia, in 1814. Orphaned at the age of three, he lived with an aunt, Sallie Williamson, in Norfolk, Virginia. He graduated from North Carolina College and the Medical College in Philadelphia. He moved back to North Carolina and practiced medicine before moving to Georgia where a sister lived. While in Georgia, he heard from another sister, Sarah Eliza Wright (Mrs. George) Lea of Dallas County, Arkansas, about the state. In 1846, Wright moved to Camden, Arkansas, setting up practice there. He married Lucy Macon Green in 1854. A few years later, Wright bought Solon Borland’s house in Little Rock. Weldon Wright financed Elisha Baxter during the Brooks-Baxter War, giving $30,000 to Baxter. Wright served as Receiving and Disbursing Officer of the State of Arkansas and as Governor Baxter's financial manager.
