This collection contains an expense statement that Charles E. Tobey submitted to the government while acting as State Land Agent in Dardanelle, Pope County, Arkansas, in 1854.
Biographical/Historical Note
Charles Edward Tobey was born April 5, 1818, in Maine. He moved to Pope County, Arkansas, where he married Angeline Poplin May 6, 1847. They had several children, Ellis, Mary E., George, Augusta, Lillibel, Ada, Steven, Charles, and Birdie. In 1854, he was the State Land Agent at Dardenelle. He served as State Representative for Pope County in 1850-1851, 1866-1867, and 1885-1886. In 1875-1878, he was a State Senator. He became a leader in the Brothers of Freedom movement in Arkansas and was nominated in 1880 as the Greenback candidate for Secretary of State. He died October 2, 1913, in Texas.
