Description
This collection contains documents such as deeds, leases, and bonds, related to the leasing of the salt springs in Arkansas.
Biographical/Historical Note
In the early 1800s, the salt springs in Arkansas Territory were a highly sought-after commodity. The government, recognizing the value of salt, refused to sell land containing salt springs and leased it instead. Rights to the salt springs remained a controversial subject, but by the 1840s salt production was no longer a lucrative business in Arkansas.
