This collection contains a masthead from the Arkansaw Traveler, circa 1884, and a negative image of the masthead.

Biographical/Historical Note

Opie Read was born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1852 to Guilford and Elizabeth Read. Opie was a writer and a lecturer who worked for several newspapers including three in Little Rock, Arkansas: the Arkansas Gazette, the Arkansas Evening Democrat, and the Evening Ledger. He earned a reputation as a humorist writer while working for the Gazette. In 1882, he and his brother-in-law, Philo D. Benham, founded the "Arkansaw Traveler," a comic newspaper.
