Description
This is a 1923 application for a pistol permit made by Mrs. Nellie Hill in Lawrence County.
Biographical/Historical Note
In 1923, the Arkansas State Legislature passed a law to mandate gun registrations. Gun owners had to apply for a pistol permit at the county seat and it was the responsibility of the County Clerk, County Judge, and Justices of the Peace to approve or deny the permits. This law remained in effect for 3 years with the associated fees paid by applicants going toward the school district in which they lived. During that time, Lawrence County received many applications for pistol permits but only a handful came from women within the county. Mrs. Nellie Hill (age unknown) applied for a permit to carry her Smith & Wesson .38 pistol.
