Description
This is a large, cabinet card photograph depicting the Lonoke High School graduating class of 1896. The only name noted on the back of the photograph is that of Kate Correthers, but she is not identified on the front of the photograph.
Biographical/Historical Note
By 1879, the town of Lonoke was populous enough for the need for free, public education to become apparent. There were only meager state funds set aside for this purpose, so the citizens of Lonoke privately subscribed $10,000 to supplement them. These funds enabled them to inaugurate a free, ten-month public school for the town.
