Biographical/Historical Note

The Rugg Street School in Hot Springs opened its doors in 1903, and produced its first graduating glass in 1910. Unfortunately, the school burned in 1913, forcing the school to begin holding its classes in the basement of Visitor's Chapel A.M.E. Church. In 1914, a new building was erected, and the school was renamed Langston High School in honor of African-American U.S. Congressman John Mercer Langson.
