Biographical/Historical Note
The Allen Hotel, an imposing three-story, 40-room hotel, was built by Joe Lee Allen in 1912. The Allens were said to have held great parties at the hotel. The Allen family sold the hotel to the Curry Family in the 1920s. It was a very successful hotel in downtown Monticello, On the first floor was a lobby, a restaurant, Tom Todd's Popular Price Store, a beauty parlor and the Owen Jolley Hardware Store. The other floors held guest rooms. The hotel burned in an electrical fire that had spread from the hardware store next door, on December 15th, 1943.
