This is a photograph of the Reverend Andrew J. Hunter. In this sepia-tone image Hunter is looking straight toward the camera.

Biographical/Historical Note

Andrew Hunter was born in Antrim, Ireland on December 26, 1913, and while he was still a child, his family immigrated to Pennsylvania. Hunter was Presbyterian until the death of his father, soon after which his family converted to Methodism in 1833. Hunter attend college in Missouri for a short time and soon after, he started teaching school in St. Louis. He moved to Indian Territory in 1835 to teach and preach to school children. Hunter ended up living in Batesville, Arkansas, were he was admitted to the ministry in November 1836. Hunter was active in the Methodist Church for 55 years. He was elected to the Arkansas State Senate for Bradley and Dallas counties and served as president of the Senate. Hunter passed away on July 3, 1902, in Little Rock, where he was buried in Oakland Memorial Cemetery.
