Description

This document provides the appraisal and administrator's bond for the John C. Luttig's estate. The administration bond, written by Lewis de Mun, is in the sum of eight thousand dollars, an unusually large amount for a bond if this kind; due to the large amount, the administrators, widow Elizabeth Luttig and Moses Graham required the help of eight co-signers. The appraisal of the store Luttig ran until his death is several pages long. It details the property left to or claimed by Elizabeth Luttig. On the right hand side of the last page you can see the string that was used to sew the pages together.

Biographical/Historical Note

The Luttig family was among the early pioneers who settled in Lawrence County. John C. Luttig was a former soldier and was asked by Cristian Wilt, a merchant and supplier from St. Louis, to run a store for him on the White River near Polk Bayou, which is modern day Batesville. Trade along the Mississippi River and its many branches was a lucrative business at the time. The appraisal documents in this probate offer an interesting look into the types of items sold in a frontier store and their costs, as well as the types of items found in the home of a merchant.
