Boone County was established in 1869, with land from parts of Carroll and Marion counties. The county's name has usually been interpreted as a salute to pioneer Daniel Boone, but some evidence suggests that early settlers believed the area’s beauty to have been a “boon” or gift to them, hence, the name. Harrison is the county seat.
