Biographical/Historical Note
The Arkansas Department of Information Systems provides information technology solutions for the Arkansas state government. It maintains the government's telecommunications services and ensures connectivity and security among the various state agencies. The department was created in 1977 by Act 884, and was originally named the Arkansas Department of Computer Services. In 1997, Act 914 reestablished ADCS under a the new name of the Arkansas Department of Information Systems and raised it to a cabinet-level department. The legislature established six goals for the agency: 1) plan and manage information technology infrastructures, 2) increase other state agencies’ awareness of opportunities to share information, 3) provide information technology services, 4) increase opportunities to exchange and share information, 5) develop state standards for information technology, and 6) develop a state information technology plan.
