Biographical/Historical Note
The Arkansas Tuberculosis Sanitorium was created in 1910 with help from Judge Joseph M. Hill, who had been diagnosed with tuberculosis in 1905 and treated in Arizona. The site chosen was in Booneville, where the climate and mountain air were thought to improve recovery. By the time the Sanatorium closed in 1973, an estimated 70,000 patients had been treated there.
