Biographical/Historical Note

Madison Training School was located in Madison, Saint Francis County, Arkansas. A Rosenwald School, built in the 1920s, it was financed by Julius Rosenwald, a philanthropist who funded the construction of many black schools in the south. The Rosenwald Fund was established in 1917 and ended in 1948. Madison Training School included a teacherage, a residence for teachers. In an effort to preserve the school's history, the Madison Community Outreach Center conducted oral history questionnaire surveys, recorded oral histories, and collected photographic images. The project was made possible with a Black History Grant from the Arkansas Humanities Council and the Black History Advisory Committee (now the Black History Commission of Arkansas).
