This collection consists of a roster of Company A, Second Regiment, Arkansas Volunteer Infantry, of the Spanish American War.
Biographical/Historical Note
On April 25, 1898, the U.S. declared war on Spain after negotiations failed to quell a revolt in Cuba. On the same day, Congress requested two regiments of National Guard troops from Arkansas. There was no well-organized state company, so the state called for volunteers. The volunteers made up the First and Second Regiments of Arkansas Volunteer Infantry. The 2nd Regiment of Arkansas Volunteer Infantry was mustered into service on May 25, 1898, under the command of Colonel Virgil Y. Cook. They were sent to Camp George H. Thomas in Chickamauga, Georgia, to receive training before being sent to Cuba. However, the conflict ended before either they or the First Regiment were sent. The First Regiment was ordered to return to Arkansas in September. However, the 2nd Regiment was chosen to remain in service and sent to Camp Shipp in Anniston, Alabama. They were able to return home in January and officially mustered out February 25, 1899. Although the regiment never saw combat, they lost one officer and twenty-seven infantrymen to disease.
